The Guardian of Spiti Valley

The Guardian of Spiti Valley

After a long day of travelling through the rugged roads of Spiti, we finally reached Langza, a village perched at nearly 14,500 feet above sea level. The narrow winding roads, the thin mountain air, and the lack of oxygen had left us completely exhausted. As we arrived at our homestay, I looked up and saw the towering Buddha statue sitting peacefully in meditation above the village.

In that moment, it truly felt like the Buddha was watching over the entire valley. Standing high above Langza with the mighty Himalayas as a backdrop, it was easy to understand why many see it as the guardian of this remote corner of Spiti. Somehow, the fatigue of the journey disappeared the moment I saw it.

That night was bitterly cold, with strong winds sweeping across the village, but none of it mattered. Photographing the Milky Way from such a peaceful and spiritual place was an experience I’ll never forget. Every time I looked through the camera, my eyes drifted back to the silent figure of the Buddha beneath the stars. It wasn’t just another night of astrophotography—it was one of those rare moments where the landscape, the sky, and the feeling of the place came together perfectly.
