BEYOND THE STARS

There is a universe beyond what our eyes can see.

Nebulae glowing across thousands of light-years, distant galaxies, intricate star-forming regions and faint cosmic structures are all waiting to be captured—but deep-sky astrophotography is far more than simply pointing a telescope at the sky and taking an image.

Beyond the Stars is a 4-day, 3-night immersive deep-sky photography workshop designed to take you through the complete journey of deep-sky imaging—from choosing and setting up an imaging system to capturing, processing and bringing out the hidden details and colours buried in astronomical data.

Whether you are interested in a simple portable setup or a sophisticated heavy imaging rig, whether you shoot colour or monochrome, broadband or narrowband, widefield or narrow-field, this workshop brings it all together in one comprehensive experience.

What You’ll Explore

1. Colour & Monochrome Imaging

Understand the two major approaches to deep-sky imaging. Learn how one-shot colour cameras compare with monochrome cameras and individual LRGB channels, when each approach makes sense, and how to get the most out of both.

2. Broadband & Narrowband

From natural-looking broadband images to dramatic emission-nebula narrowband compositions, explore the different ways of recording faint deep-sky objects.

Understand RGB, LRGB and narrowband imaging, filter selection, exposure strategies and how different wavelengths reveal completely different aspects of the universe.

3. Widefield & Narrow-Field

Deep-sky photography doesn’t always require a massive telescope.

Discover how widefield systems can capture enormous nebulae and large celestial structures, while long-focal-length systems reveal intricate details in galaxies, planetary nebulae and smaller targets.

4 Portable to Imaging Rigs

Explore the complete range of astrophotography setups—from compact, portable rigs designed for mobility to large, permanently or semi-permanently configured imaging systems.

Understand the advantages, limitations and practical considerations of different equipment combinations, and how to build a system around your goals rather than simply accumulating equipment.

5. Simple to Complex Systems

A deep-sky setup can be as simple or as sophisticated as you want it to be.

Learn how different components come together—from camera, telescope and mount to guiding, filter systems, automated control and advanced accessories—and understand what each component actually contributes to the final image.

The objective is not simply to show you equipment, but to help you understand why a particular setup works and when you actually need it.

From Capture To Final Image

Capturing the data is only half the journey.

A major part of Beyond the Stars is dedicated to image processing, where raw astronomical data is transformed into a finished deep-sky image.

You will learn how to approach your data from the initial calibration and stacking stages through to gradient removal, colour calibration, noise reduction, stretching, star management, narrowband processing, colour mapping, detail enhancement and final image refinement.

The workshop focuses on understanding the reasoning behind the processing workflow, rather than simply following a sequence of buttons.

One Workshops & Many Approaches

The real strength of Beyond the Stars is that there is no single “correct” way to photograph the night sky.

You will see how different combinations of:

  1. Mono + LRGB
  2. Mono + Narrowband
  3. One-shot Colour + Broadband
  4. One-shot Colour + Narrowband
  5. Widefield + Portable rigs
  6. Long focal length + Heavy rigs
  7. Simple systems + Advanced automated systems

can all produce remarkable results when used appropriately.

The aim is to help you understand the possibilities, make informed equipment choices, and develop an imaging workflow that suits your own style, targets and level of experience.

4 Days, 3 Nights – A Complete Deep-Sky Experience

Over four days and three nights, immerse yourself in the world of deep-sky astrophotography—combining practical imaging, equipment understanding and hands-on processing.

Whether you are taking your first serious steps into deep-sky photography or looking to take your existing imaging skills to the next level, Beyond the Stars is designed to give you a broader understanding of the craft.

Because the night sky isn’t limited to one kind of camera, one kind of telescope or one kind of imaging technique.

There is a whole universe beyond the stars—and this workshop is about learning how to capture it.
